VeeamON 2020 ONLINE – Event Recap & Product Announcements

VeeamON 2020 has been over for a couple of weeks now, as it was held virtually online on June 17-19.  I have to say for the first time being a virtual event; it was an extreme success.  The site was easy to navigate and get around, the general sessions were full of information, and the breakout sessions, as well as the VeeamathON, were excellent.  Overall I would say it was a tremendous success, and I know everyone will say not the same as being there in person, but being online, it reached many thousands more.  Hopefully, 2021 will be a better year, and we can have it in person.

Some of the new technology announcements made were around Veeam v11, amongst other things:

v11 – Google Cloud Storage, Archive Tier, Instant SQL and NAS

Anton Gostev discussed the top new features and enhancements in Backup & Replication v11. @michaelcade1 then demoed those features.

Those features included:

  • Continuous Data Protection
  • Scale-Out Backup Enhancements
    • Google Cloud Storage
    • Archive Tier and Amazon Glacier/Deep Archive and Azure Blob Archive
  • Instant Recovery
    • Any Backup to Hyper-V
    • NAS Backup as File Share
    • MSSQL and Oracle Databases

And finally releasing a Veeam Agent for macOS!

Backup for Microsoft Office 365 v5

The most significant part of this release is the ability to backup and recover Microsoft Teams data. In the v5 demo, @vmiss33 showed off the new capability we have with Teams backup and recovery. Teams now have their own Explorer, used for restore operations.

Backup for AWS v2

This version is out now and comes just six months after the release of v1. This new version (available from AWS Marketplace now) includes new features like Snapshot Replication that replicates Amazon EBS snapshots across AWS accounts and regions—changed block tracking that only reads blocks that have changed since the last backup or replica.

Veeam Availability Orchestrator v3

The next iteration of VAO is coming with many new enhancements.  More found here – VAO v3.

As always, there were so many breakout technical sessions that it was hard to try to attend all of them.  Ones that I was unable to make in the morning, I was lucky enough to have them in the west time zone to participate in the afternoon.  Here are my top 5 sessions you should watch –

  • Veeam Backup & Replication v10 Sizing Best Practices East – Tim Smith (@tsmith_co) & Neil Henderson
  • Version 10: Unleash the Power of NAS Backup East – Dmitry Popov (@angrydok) & Michael Cade (@michaelcade1)
  • Linux Repositories to the Rescue! – Tom Sightler (@SightUnseen_)
  • Veeam Automation With PowerShell Deep Dive – Parts 1 & 2 – Joe Hughes (@jhoughes)
  • Kubernetes Backups: Veeam and Kasten Essential Best Practices – David Hill (@davidhill_co) & Vaibhav Kamra (@vaibhavkamra)

These are just some of the sessions that I attended, and I am watching many more now On-Demand like – Architecting Veeam Backup for Microsoft Office 365 To Scale by Tim Smith as well.

If you use Veeam or are interested in the sessions as well as upcoming technologies I highly recommend you go to the VeeamON site to either login or register to watch things On-Demand – VeeamON 2020 – ONLINE
